legibility.info provides information on communication design for people with and without visual impairments. The design requirements for typeface, text and graphics are dependent on the specific needs of individual readers.
The site brings together the latest thinking on inclusive communication design in eight interactive sections based on the latest scientific research, German standard DIN 1450, Lettering – Legibility and a comprehensive evaluation carried out by specialists at the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (DBSV).
It provides both background information and a list of sources for further exploration. For quick reference, you will find a summary of the recommendations in our Yellow Pages at the end of each section.
Human perception is complex and technology ever-changing; existing sources are many and varied and there are numerous questions still to be answered. For this reason, the recommendations given here simply set out to reflect the current state of play. Further information will be added as new findings emerge, but it is vital that each design is checked on an individual basis.
Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
